GITAM and Blockchain for Impact (BFI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a MedTech incubation centre at the GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (GIMSR) in Visakhapatnam. BFI will support the centre through a structured grant to build and operate it.
India imports over 70% of its medical devices in key categories, while hospitals continue to generate clinical problems that rarely translate into usable technologies.
The gap lies in how these problems move from identification to development and deployment. Clinical insight, engineering capability, and product development often operate separately, and most ideas do not move beyond early stages.
GITAM’s multidisciplinary environment brings clinicians, researchers, and engineers into closer working coordination, with access to patients, diagnostics, and clinical data through GIMSR.
The GITAM and Blockchain For Impact MedTech incubation centre will enable healthcare problems to be taken forward through design, prototyping, and clinical validation with clinician involvement, supported by infrastructure, mentorship, and access to clinical settings.
The incubation centre aims to focus on non-invasive diagnostics and patient monitoring, where earlier detection can reduce time to diagnosis and lower the cost of care. The centre will support startups, students, residents, and faculty, and help develop, validate, and take solutions forward in India.
GITAM is working towards strengthening India’s MedTech capability by supporting the development of medical technologies within the country, contributing to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
